Exploring Centering Prayer as Christian Meditation Practice

Centering Prayer is a foundational contemplative practice. Coming from the ancient tradition of the Christian mystics, it is a method of praying in silence, a method that teaches us to detach from our thoughts and ordinary mental activity that can distract us from fully surrendering to God's living presence and action within each of us. Centering Prayer helps to develop the skill and capacity to let go of the very human tendency to control life through thinking and other ego mechanisms. It allows "the still small voice within" to gradually emerge, be heard, and be trusted. Centering Prayer is a practice that supports healing of mind, soul, and body. Most importantly, as prayer, it draws us into intimacy with God. In this morning gathering, we will learn some essential tenets of Centering Prayer and have the opportunity for practice.
