Today’s Gospel reading from Luke is one that oftentimes leaves us scratching our head in confusion. Jesus, the Prince of Peace and unity, speaks to his disciples about division, “Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division.” Wow, what’s this all about?
Once again that which was spoken and written thousands of years ago is relevant even today. As Jesus speaks, holy tension arises. The Good News of Jesus forces us to choose—to take sides, offers us the opportunity to stand with the “radicalness” of Truth verses “what the world thinks and does”—whatever is the current cultural acceptance and interpretation of truth. Here’s where the divisions come in—here lies holy tension…
